    "Willie" Moretti was the notorious Underboss of The Genovese Crime Family in New Jersey. He was born in Bari Italy in 1894. Moretti was shot dead Gangland Style (Whacked) at Joe's Elbow Room in Cliffside Park, New Jersey on October 4,  1951 ...

In the mid - 1930's Willie Moretti's name came to light when he became friends with an unknown singer named Frank Sinatra. Sinatra's then wife Nancy Barbatp was related to John Barbato who was a soldier in Moretti's crew. At the time Sinatra had a tough time booking singing ingagements so Moretti helped him book New Jersey Clubs in return for a percentage of his earnings. By 1941 Sinatra was known throughout the United States and was on the verge of signing a lucrative contract with a national promoter. However years earlier he had signed a contract with band leader Tommy Dorsey who was reluctant to let Sinatra out of the contract. With the help of Moretti, Frank was able to get out of this contract. Moretti shoved aPistol down Dorsey's throat and threatenedto Kill Dorsey if he didn't release Sinatra. Sinatra was then free to sign a lucrative Record Deal as well as the contract with the national club promoter. 

Around the same time Moretti also became acquainted with up-and-coming comedians Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis who performed several nightclubs he frequented. Jerry Lewis and Dean Martina s well as Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra all performed at the Wedding of Moretti's daughter in Hasbrouk Heights New Jersey. That wedding was the inspiration for the wedding scene of Don Vito Corleone's daughter Connie in Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo's The Godfather.

It is without question that Frank Sinatra is the inspiration for Johnny Fontane and Mob Boss Vito Corleone threatening to Kill band leader if he didn't release Frankie from his contract they had together . Frank Sinatra would never admit this, but all those close to him at the time, know that it is the factual truth.

In the novel and film, Fontane is a famous crooner and occasional film star in the vein of Frank Sinatra. He is also the godson of Vito Corleone, the head of a major Mafia crime family. The Corleone family intervenes four times to aid his career. The first, years before the novel's and film's main time frame, Vito used violent persuasion (an "offer he can't refuse") to buy out Fontane's ironclad contract with a big bandleader; after the bandleader declines Vito's first offer to buy out the contract, he orders his personal assassin Luca Brasi to place a gun to the man's forehead, telling the bandleader that either his signature or his brains would be on the contract.

The second, the infamous "horse-head" scene, is an act of intimidation, carried out at the Godfather's behest to ensure Fontane is cast in a war film that could revitalize the singer's career. The film's producer, Jack Woltz, despises Fontane for "ruining" an actress he was grooming for stardom and had been having an affair with, and thus blacklists the singer from the production. After Corleone family consigliere Tom Hagen fails to persuade Woltz to cast Fontane, Woltz awakens soon after to find his prize racehorse's severed head in his bed as a warning. Terrified, Woltz relents and casts Fontane. Months later, Vito uses his Hollywood connections to ensure that Fontane wins the Academy Award for Best Actor. Finally, the Corleones finance Fontane's film studio.

COFFEE

Coffee and Cafes. Two things very near and dear to me. Million so others as well. In New York, we have the Best, “For getta bout it Seattle” !!! I remember 25 years ago and more when there were no Starbucks and just very few cafes in the hole city. More or less the only cafes were in Greenwich Village, Little Italy, and the East Village. There were hole neighborhoods, completely cafe-less and if you wanted to go to one you had to go to the Village or Little Italy, nothing on the hole Upper East Side.

   Anyway, Coffee and Cafes are a huge thing these days and part of many a life.

Coffee and cafes, let me tell you about some of the best and my impressions. Hey, I’m a guy who has been frequenting cafes for years, each and every day, just about. I haven’t Jumped on the Band Wagon in the past 5 or ten years. I’ve been riding it for 30.

   Number “One,” in New York,  a good Cup of Joe is King, “Regular” not

Grande Caramel Latte and overpriced crap like that. Not the esoteric overpriced espresso, Cortado, Machiato, Blue Bottle, and Site Specific Coffee, and blends that try to break down and make too make of a good simple thing. You know what I mean. A “Cup of Joe,” is King. Used to be Five Cents at coffee shops all over the city. Well that’s going way back. Hey don’t get me wrong, I love Espresso, Espresso Machiatto, and the great Cortado they serve at Abraco. It’s just that I gotta tell you, a “Regular” is King and let’s hope it always will be.

   Abraco is utterly awesome. Maybe the Best Single tasting coffee in town, is their Cortado. Man it’s tasty. Just out of this world. But I have some problems with Abraco, as I’m not someone to pay a Premium for what I call “Hit and Run Coffee”

What is “Hit and Run Coffee” you ask? Well, let me tell you. Hit and Run Coffee is a coffee that you get at places like Caffeteria, Abraco, Third Rail Coffee, and tiny little Coffee Bars that have little or no chairs and tables and maybe just a small counter space for standing. Listen, I’m not in the habit of paying  $3.50, $4.50 or “More” for a cup of coffee, having to stand at a counter, drinking it in short time and leaving. Ending up $5.00 or more less in my pockets. Well you may think, “What’s $5.00?” Right? What’s Five Dollars? Imagine if you have 5 $5.00 coffees a week for one year. Do you know how much money that adds up to? Relax, I’ll do the Math for you. That’s $1,300 my friends. No small sum? Multiply that by 5 years and you’re talking $6,500, or by Ten Years and we’re talking $13,000. That’s a lot of Friggin Cash my friends. Hey I’m not saying you should not go out and have coffee. I do all the time. Heck, on my days off, I sometimes end up in cafes three times in one day.  I spend about $1,508 a year on coffee, $7,500 in five years or about $15,000 in ten. That’s a lot. But I get a lot. Heck, I used to spend about $2,200 a year on coffee,  $10, 000 or more in 5, or about $20,000 in ten years. But I have cut back. I’ve seen the light. I hardly ever spend $5.00 on a coffee any more. All I need is the $2.00 variety. A good honest “Cup of Joe,” a “Regular.” And I need to get my money’s worth. If I just wanted a good cup can easily make a great one in my house for just “15 Cents a Cup,” but I go and have one at a Café for 15 times that amount. Why? The extra $2.35 I pay for the coffee plus tip, is to be able to “Sit” down and relax in a nice pleasant atmosphere. I’m not gonna pay 27 times ($3.75 Average price coffee at Upscale Coffee Bar) to stand at a counter and not being able to sit down and relax. At home I can  make a tasty cup of Coffee from the Highest Quality Coffee money can buy with the coffee I buy at  “Porto Rico Coffee” on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, just a half block from my house. No, I pay all that extra money to sit in the pleasant environment of a nice coffee. Also to see other people, maybe a friend or the possibility of meeting someone new and interesting. I read, I write, I hang with friends, I relax. I can not do that at a overpriced “Coffee Bar” that doesn’t have any place to sit.

  And speaking of Porto Rico Coffee, it mystifies me that people are so foolish as to pay $11.95 or more for a mass-produced commercial pound of Coffee from Starbucks instead of going to the “Best Coolest Place in Town” to be some of the World’s Finest Coffee at Porto Rico Coffee, people who have been doing this for more than 100 years, not 20. It just doesn’t make sense. By the way, the coffee I buy at Porto Rico is just $5.99 and $6.99 a pound, half the price of a pound of Starbucks Coffee.

   Anyway. It’s all up to you. I’ll  stick with my Regular “Cup of Joe” with a Espresso and Cappucino thrown in here and there, and as a special treat a Cortado from Abraco every now and then. And I’ll get to sit down and relax with my coffee each day, putting an extra $1,000 a year in my pocket, or Airfare and a few nice meals when I go on vaction. How bout you, “Hit and Run”and pay more, or Sit Down and Relax, Pay Less, Save, and put a Thousand Bucks a Year in your pockets, or $10,000 in ten ?

Makers Mark Old Fashion

 

 

An Old Fashion and New Orleans. Two things I Love dearly. And drinking Old Fashions in New Orleans and Bourbon Old Fashions to be more specific is a favorite pastime of mine, especially at such fine Bars as Napoleon House, The Long Bar at Tujague's, or at Arnaud's and Galatoire's.

The first thing i order from my waiter at my beloved Galatoire's is a Bourbon Old Fashion. They make them perfectly here, muddling an Orange Slice with sugar, Maraschino Cherry, Soda, and Angostora Bitters before filling the glass with Ice and adding my Bourbon. The waiter brings my Old Fashion and I'm in Heaven. I'm at Galatoire's in New Orleans. It's one of my favorite restaurants in the World. I have my drink, sitting in the main dining room looking the menu over. "Oh Bliss."

    What to have for lunch. Shall I get a Gumbo, Raw Oysters, or Oysters Rockefeller to start? Decisions, Decisions! And my main Course? Trout Almondine, Shrimp Clemenceau, or Filet Mignon topped with Fried Oysters and Hollandaise. Think I'll go for a Cup of Gumbo, followed by the Oysters Rockefellor, and Trout Almondine for my main. They should go with my Bourbon Old Fashion quite nicely.

    What, "No Wine with Your Meal," you ask. knowing what a Wine freak I am.

"No, not in New Orleans my friends." I do not drink Wine in the Cresent City. It's all pretty much Cocktails when I'm down there, maybe a Beer or two, but no Wine what-so-ever in New Orleans for me. Hey it's the way to go in New Orleans. That's what you do down there, Cocktails are preferred throughout the meal over Wine. And that's fine by me. It just seems to go better. My Bourbon Old Fashion and all the fine Creole Cuisine. I Love it.

So, if you're ever down there, in that wonderful city on the Mississippi, New Orleans, go to Galatoire's, Antoine's, Arnauds's. Order yourself a nice Lunch or Dinner, and don't forget to get a couple Bourbon Old Fashions to go with your meal. It's a match made in Heaven, Creole Food and an Old Fashion in New Orleans, Louisiana. "Do it."

EVER HEAR of The GARBAGE PALTE ???

  Didn't think so, neither did I, but it seems quite interesting and I'm sure most American's would just love it if they ever new of it if it wasn't for the fact that it's a regional specialty of Rochester, New York. So what is it you say? A Garbage Plate is a plate consisting of Hash Brown Potatoes, Macaroni Salad, and a type of Chili all on one plate. The plate might also contain a Fried Egg and or Cheese, and I'll bet that some Bacon and some sort of Sausage might make it on a plate as well. Now isn't that the kind of dish most American's would just Love? If only they knew about it.

So now what for Billy Bush? Suspended by NBC pending review, will he return to the Today, be fired, or sent to MSNBC to cover bowling tournaments? NBC, a broadcast expert pointed out tonight, has a poor record for dealing with anchor management. They’ve had more than their share of scandals and always seem to get it wrong. To wit: Brian Williams, now on MSNBC, demoted from the network after being uncovered as a fantasist. Or fabulist. Or liar. Ann Curry, forced off the Today show and then out of NBC despite her popularity because Matt Lauer was perceived as wanting her gone. Deborah Norville, canned for Katie Couric. Norville herself was hired to replace Jane Pauley, who was forced out of the Today show. Pauley has recently scored a huge comeback triumph being named new host of “CBS Sunday Morning.” And it’s not just in news where NBC has made huge errors. The whole Jay Leno-Conan O’Brian debacle is cited as even bigger, with Leno demoted to 10pn and then restored to the Tonight show after Conan was named to the Tonight show and then just dumped from the network. He now hosts a nightly talk show on TNT. With all this history– and no doubt more that I’ve missed- does Billy Bush have a chance here? You tell me.
